A Wine-Town Name on a Mill River
John Marvin, Bethuel Hack, and Harmon Allen founded Milan in 1831 on the Saline River, part of the River Raisin watershed; the town was renamed for the Italian city in 1836 in hopes wild river-grapes would support a wine industry, and it straddles the Washtenaw-Monroe county line to this day, becoming a Michigan city only in 1967.
