A Mill Seat Platted After a Fire
Surveyor John Mudget Mack flagged Manchester's site on the River Raisin as 'a good mill seat' in 1824; John Gilbert bought the land in 1826 and, with Emanuel Case and Harry Gilbert, built the first mill in 1832 before platting the village in 1833. That original mill burned in 1853 and was rebuilt.
